Christmas is coming!  It is so exciting to have wonderful things to look forward to!

*Please remember to send your gift exchange gift by Tuesday, December 19.

*Wednesday, December 20, we have early dismissal at 11:30am.  This is also the last day of second quarter (report cards will be posted on January 5).

*When we return in January, we will begin participating in The Great Postcard Exchange with schools from all 50 states!  If you would be willing to supply some postcard stamps or some money towards purchasing Nebraska postcards, please let me know.  Thank you very much!

*For science, beginning in January, Mrs. Maxon asks that each student bring a 1/2 inch binder filled with wide-ruled paper.

*We will not have a newsletter over break, since we will return to a shorter week.

Newsletter for December 11-15

Photos from Hour of Code

We LOVED participating in the International Hour of Code - an initiative to encourage kids to try computer coding.  You can find more information and activities at code.org .  We also loved giving the school's new iPad cart a try - 16 new iPads teachers can use in their classroom!

NaNoWriMo - WOW!

We took our final word counts for National Novel Writing Month today.  As a class, our stories contain over 65,000 words!  Awesome!

It doesn't quite feel like December when we're enjoying these pleasant temperatures outside!

We'll only be doing online orders for Scholastic Books this month.  Please place your order at https://orders.scholastic.com/GKXXB by December 6.  Thank you!

News for November 20-21

We have a short week, only two days - then Thanksgiving Break!  So, no newsletter this week, but here are a couple of notes instead:

*No spelling or memory next week!

*There will be a newsletter next Tuesday, November 21, that will include information (like spelling and memory work) for the week after Thanksgiving.

*The quiz over the southeast region states and capitals will be on Tuesday, November 28.

*I'm encouraging all students to read part of their NaNoWriMo novel to a friend or relative over the break.  It's great for them to have an audience and get positive feedback!

*We had a great time at the Joslyn yesterday!  Enjoy a few photos and a video from the art-making part of our field trip:

*Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

Challenge Words

Oops!  I posted the newsletter without the additional "starred"/challenge words that some students need.  The challenge words for Lesson 9 (test on October 27) are:

escaped
celery
squeaked
bleachers
jersey

I assume most students will have completed their weekly spelling homework before seeing this, so please do not worry about them for that assignment.  Thanks for your understanding!

Giganto Nebraska Map

This week, we got to spend some time with a "Giganto Nebraska Map".  We are able to borrow this map from the Geography Educators of Nebraska group that owns five of these maps to share with teachers all across the state.  It was a really awesome experience!

Ask your child:
How many counties are in Nebraska?
What are some of the reasons Nebraska counties got their names?
What county is big enough for the state of Connecticut to fit inside it?
What did you learn about rivers in Nebraska?

Newsletter for September 11-15

Quick note: there was a misprint in last week's newsletter!  Students were only required to learn the Old Testament books of the Bible from Genesis to Job.  This week, students should memorize Genesis to Malachi!  A few students chose to recite the entire Old Testament, so they will not need to recite it again this week (I will email those parents).
